I worked at the Statesman for four years total, from 1996-98 and again from 1999-2001. I worked on the news and features desks as a copy editor, copy chief and wire editor. While here, I won an honorable mention in headline writing from the Texas APME.
As you'll see below, many of my best headlines are for
a humor columnist named John Kelso. We were only
acquaintances, but he and I had a sort of goofy psychic connection. I loved writing headlines for his column. To this day, they are my personal favorites. Click any story to enlarge it.
